Out-of-the-Box Model to Support Detroit Artists
Purchase a Share today in support of Detroit artists. Featured artists for the inaugural season of Community Supported Art: Detroit are: Alyssa Baron-Klask, Carrie Dickason, Ismael Duran, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Sean Hages, Emily Linn (with collaborator Alana Bartol), Stacey Malasky (with collaborator Patrick Crouch), Wesley Taylor (with collaborator Invincible), and Elizabeth Wight.
CSA makes connecting to local artists and buying art easy and affordable. Community Supported Agriculture has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from neighboring farms. Community Supported Art is a similar endeavor, with the same buy-local spirit in mind, to support local art, artists and art supporters. Our jury, comprised of local artists and arts professionals selected each of the nine artists. Participating jurors were: Mira Burack, visual artist and assistant director of the Kresge Arts in Detroit program; Lynn Crawford, published author and art critic; Vievee Francis, published poet and associate editor for Callaloo Journal; and Joel Peterson, multi-instrumentalist, composer and music programmer. The 9 artists receive a stipend of $1,000 to produce 50 “shares.” Shares cost $350.
Benefits for CSA Shareholders:
- Receive multiple works from local emerging and mid-career artists
- Develop relationships with local artists and art community
- Discover new artists and explore a variety of disciplines
- Support local artists’ careers and a vibrant community
Shareholders will receive 3 locally-produced “farm boxes,” each featuring the work of 3 of our 9 spring edition artists, once per month at special pick-up events May through July, 2012.
Through the CSA program we are seeking to support artists in the creation of new work and build an engaged community of local arts supporters who can discover new artists from multiple disciplines. Shares are still available, however, quantities are limited. Purchase your share today!
