ARTSERVE MICHIGAN SUPPORTS MILLAGE INCREASE FOR DIA

WIXOM, Mich. – ArtServe Michigan, Michigan’s leading statewide arts and cultural advocacy organization, urges residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties to vote yes to approve a 0.2 millage for 10 years in support of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). In March, ArtServe Michigan’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the DIA’s strategy for sustainability through millage fundraising for support of operations over the next decade.

“The DIA contributes richly to the region’s quality of life with inspiring experiences benefiting both residents and visitors and educational programs enriching more than 37,600 students from 587 schools from 2010 to 2012. The DIA also is an economic driver to our local economy, spending nearly $7 million on goods and services from local vendors last fiscal year,” said Jennifer Goulet, CEO and president of ArtServe Michigan. “The millage is a strategic course that will set the DIA on a pathway to financial stability, helping to protect the future of one of our key cultural institutions.”

Voting for the proposed millage takes place August 7. The requested increase of 0.2 mils amounts to approximately $15 per year for every $150,000 of a home’s fair market value – just a little more than a dollar per month. The increase is projected to raise $23 million annually.

According to the DIA, the millage increase will pay for operating expenses to allow the organization to build its endowment for self-sustainability beyond 2022. The increase also would fund extended hours and one additional open day each week to accommodate more school visits. Residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties would receive free, unlimited general admission if the millage passes.
